I have always loved music, and always will. Being that my family is musically inclined. I have always loved hearing my mother play her 7/8's lenght cielo and that when I was younger round junior/middle school age, I played a B Flat Clarinet. There are alot of genre's out there that I do enjoy and one thing for me about music is that I love to sing and I love to be able to keep my voice in tune. I dont think that its possible to live with out music. Some times, its what keeps me sane whem im board. Things have been proven to that music does help the younger generation in school in thier grades and I have seen it for my self. To say the least that its something that Ive grown up with and will always have in my life. There are sooooo many artist of different genres that I could mention that I know of that I have grown up listening to ever since I was a little boy. Being the family that I was raised from, music was a must in my family and with the collection of music that my family has, it will never go away. I have still yet to look for a full size record player to play the full sized records of Glen Miller and his band and different things like that. With the digital age now in this time, the technology of growing into it has been totally transformed how we hear music today. It was the classic Cassette Tape and now its the Music CD and now the DVD which has eventually lead to HDDVD which holds all. To say the least, the possibilities are endless when it comes to music. I mean, I know some people that are in the music/video areas and also where I have volunteered at many churchs supporting thier video team and help running the sound board. Getting to see it all has just .............. WOW to really see what we have. Gawww, I could go on forever in this topic...........

Thanks for sharing that, it was new to me! I didn't know she was a singer as well as an actress.

How about this one for the Beatles fans out there... a great overview of the Beatles career with lots of interviews (everyone from Roger Ebert to Mick Jagger pays tribute), musical extracts from their amazing songs and behind the scenes footage. I wasn't born until several years after the Beatles split up so this certainly isn't nostalgia on my part. I just think that they are the greatest pop group of all - not a particularly original thought, but a good one nevertheless!

Ahh ... The Beatles. I remember "Eleanor Rigby" was one of the "poems" studied in one of my college lit classes. Still not totally sure what she was keeping in that jar. 8)

Eleanor Rigby picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been,

Lives in a dream.

Waits at the window, wearing a face she keeps in a jar by the door,

Who is it for?

All the lonely people, where do they all come from?

All the lonely people, where do they all belong?

One of Heart's greatest songs ... Live

With Carrie Underwood ... Live also

And Carrie's Idol performance (And Simon's prescient comment)

(IMHO Carrie nailed "Alone" on Idol and from that performance on she was my "Idol".) 8)

You don't know how long I have waited

and I was going to tell you tonight

But the secret is still my own

and my love for you is still unknown

Alone

Gosh, thanks for posting all these links - I can see that you are a true music lover!

The Donovan song is interesting. It's very unusual to have music accompany a spoken monologue in pop.

I love Leonard Bernstein's musicals and "Somewhere" is a great song. The opening of the melody almost echoes the opening of a theme from the second movement of Beethoven's 5th piano concerto - although, of course, it is only a very small, passing resemblance and Bernstein's melody follows an entirely different line of development. It's interesting, though, in that Bernstein was a classical musician - a classical composer as well as a Broadway composer - and so influences would have come from all sorts of places.

It's extremely rare to find a first-rate lyricist in pop, but Paul Simon has to rank pretty high. I love his stuff, he's such a thoughtful and gifted songwriter: http://youtube.com/watch?v=US164O82oNU

It's interesting to learn what everyone favors or enjoys when it comes to music. I'm similar to some here, in that my taste is pretty wide. Ranging from full orchestrated music, classical to current hip-hop or rock. I grew up playing piano and the viola myself, while good friends were playing brass instruments or guitar. If the song itself is original, it has good lyrics and rhythm, I have on problem listening to it. I will admit to having several 80's rock songs on my iPod but they are mixed in with everything else.

I try to enjoy music with most things I do, be it working on cars. Then I'll have on some classic rock to what they call Golden Oldies. If I'm doing construction work, then I'll have some southern folk music on. Working on my salt water aquariums or doing some computer work, it'll be mostly music without lyrics. Something with a good rhythm and beat to keep things moving along.

Linda's sad post made me think of this Anne Murray song.

I'll come home this evenin'

I'll bet that the news will be the same

Somebody takes a hostage, somebody steals a plane

How I wanna hear the anchor man talk about a county fair

And how we cleaned up the air, how everybody learned to care

Whoa, tell me

Nobody was assassinated in the whole Third World today

And in the streets of Ireland, all the children had to do was play

And everybody loves everybody in the good old USA

We sure could use a little good news today

I still love this song! I was corny enough to buy the video. (And would probably do so again. I'm still best buds with my inner child.) 8)

When you're down and out

There seems no hope at all

But if you just believe

There's no way we can fall

Well, well, well, well, let us realize

That a change will only come

When we stand together as one

IMHO one of the best songs ever written ...

When the night has been too lonely and the road has been too long

And you think that love is only for the lucky and the strong

Just remember that in the winter, far beneath the bitter snows

Lies the seed, that with the sun's love in the spring becomes the rose.

While I think to post about it, does anyone remember my previous post in this thread about cover versions of tunes? If so, then I should mention the group Me First and The Gimme Gimmes. Am starting to get their interpretation of the Dixie Chicks' "Goodbye Earl" stuck in my noggin, and hav found myself humming it on more than one occasion. Does anyone else here know of any cool cover versions, or got any they think should be given a bit of a re-vamp?
