A special day today

It seems that today is a special day here today. The birthday of one of our gals. Linda is celebrating her birthday today!

Happy Birthday Linda!

I came home tonight and there was this little tiny mouse sitting by my computer. I was wondering what to do. I put my head down looking right into it's eyes and it said "White, It's Linda's birthday today!" Then scurried off. I've no idea how it knew!

Linda, was it cold in Vegas? Gte a chance to wear the mink vest? It seems like everyelse is freezing but San Francisco. It's in the 60s-70s in San Francisco.

Well must say I am enjoying being with my brother. But, Vegas does not hold a lot for me. Orlando has great shows. Don't gamble, drink much or smoke. Seems like a great place for 30 year old guys to go together and party. Got up at 4:00 and went downstairs to get a Starbucks. Went into the casino area and there were a hundred-or-so guys playing poker and the machines. Music blasting. Man, it is just too early for this.

It is a very interesting place, but would rather be in Vail or Aspen and party there. So far my favorite place is the House of Blues, but that is after my first day.

Yes, it is cold here. Mid 60's in the day and mid 30's at night. But, compared to the weather in the North this is just fine! .. no complaints from me!!

Linda, go play craps!

Find a guy to take you but don't go alone. It doesn't matter if you know how to play. In fact, it's better if you don't.

Gamblers, in general, can be superstitious but craps shooters are very superstitious.

A man at the craps table who doesn't know how to play is bad luck but a woman who doesn't know how to play is good luck. However, a woman who knows how to play is bad luck and an experienced woman, by herself, at the table is VERY bad luck.

So, find a guy to go play craps with you. If you know how to play, pretend you don't. If you hit a winning streak, you'll probably find guys placing bets for you. If you hit a big winning streak, you might even hear guys calling out, "Lady Luck!"

I think it would be great if you wore something fur and hit a streak at the craps table. You might begin to draw a crowd, just like in the movies. I have actually witnessed such a scene, myself. It was at the Stardust right after a show let out.

It has been very cool here, but not a real fur in sight. Must admit I am surprised and disappointed.

Worker, I am just not a gambler. Maybe it is because a "significant other" was one of the best blackjack players around. It was fun being connected with the excitement when he played. We were in Europe then where the casinos were black tie. Sometimes there were dozens betting on his hand. There, if you see a good player you can place side bets on his hand with the house. Really makes it fun when there are a lot of people involved. High rollers also are treated very differently than the ordinary player.

Trust me I know how to have fun, but I honestly don't like be in the spot light when I don't know people. (Now on a dance floor, that is another story!) I guess in a situation like this, I am uncharacteristically shy. But, must admit if I was with someone I was involved with, I would feel differently.

I hate the smoke, too. Vegas is also much more blue-collar than Europe's casinos I was in. Maybe I just am not in the right ones here.

The shows are nice, but as I mentioned, that is available in Orlando.

One thing I have found fascinating here is the architecture and design.

Minkme, kids fit in well at the Excalibur hotel, from what my brother has told me. There is a beautiful view of that hotel from my room. This building is just incredible. The elevators are weird! The travel at an angle up the pyramid. As it gets to the floor, the elevator kind of settles. It makes it feel really unsettled. Hard to explain. Just something you would sense almost immediately. At first, I thought it was me. I thought one drink and I am losing my balance?

Well, need to go meet my brother so we can tour a few more casinos.

For me, it's not really about the gambling. It's the entertainment scene, in general.

I don't care for blackjack or most card games. Roulette is a ladies' game. You can't really make money at it unless you are willing to sit at the table for a long time. It's a game of small gains but potentially big losses. Slot machines are fun to toss in a coin or two and watch the wheels spin but, overall, slots are a loser's game. Craps is the only game where you can be on a level playing field with the house. If you know the odds of each bet and stick to them you can cut the house's advantage to something like 0.32%. That's about as close to even odds as you'll ever see in a casino, anywhere.

Vegas is all about entertainment, gambling or otherwise. If you walk into a casino with ideas of making money, you have lost even before you put your first chip on the table. It's about playing the game. It's about the scenery, the glitz and the games. You're there to have fun; adult fun.

Go ahead. Throw a couple of bucks down on the blackjack table or wherever you think it's the most fun. Just don't go there thinking you're going to hit it big.

While you're there, put a dollar on black for me!

Hi Linda,

I am surprised that there are public places that still allow smoking. Here in California/San Francisco Bay Area, you can not smoke in bars and resturants. This is for the worker safety and for us non-smokers.

minkme, I was surprised too. It is not near the way it was years ago, but it still makes you walk away quickly when you are near someone smoking.

Worker, I took your advice and went to the craps table after I went for my coffee. Didn't gamble... but received a warm welcome and had a lot of fun. Think I need to learn how to play this game.

After being here for a few days it is amazing how you seem to loose track of time. If it wasn't for sunrise and sunset, I think you could quickly loose all awareness of what time it is.

Although this has been fun, and certainly a new experience, I will be ready to get back to reality.

Craps is a very fast, dynamic game. You can win or lose on almost any roll of the dice but the game can go on for several rolls as the suspense builds. As I said, it is the only game in the casino with a (nearly) level playing field, mathematically speaking. It is easy to learn the basics but, if you like mathematics, strategy and odds calculation, it can be very complex.

But, mostly, I like it because of the atmosphere. There's always something going on and people can come in and drop out of the game at any time. Everybody bets on the same dice. You don't have to roll the dice to play but you have to have money on the table to roll the dice. There are tables with low minimums; 50¢ or $1.00. There are tables that allow "high odds" bets where you can place up to 10 times your bet as "backing" on your original bet. If you play well and are lucky, you can make big bucks on craps very quickly. Or you can lose big money... very quickly.

My biggest winning story was at the craps table at the Stardust. I just got out of a show and the tables were filling up. I went over to a $1.00 minimum table and placed a few bets. Won some and lost some. Then the pit boss came over and changed the sign, raising the minimum to $5.00. I only had $20 in my pocket so I told the croupier this was my last bet but he said, "Play one more." Begrudgingly, I put another fiver on the table and won. I split my winnings and put my original bet back on the table and won that round. Then I put my whole winnings on the next round. Won again. After about a half dozen wins, I finally lost so I played one more "for the boys." (Code for tipping the dealer: You can't directly tip the dealer in craps but you can bet money on the table and, if you win the dealer takes the proceeds.) That one won on the come-out. I thanked the guys and took my chips to the cage.

In the end I won enough money to pay for my show ticket, my 2-drink minimum, bar tips and I still had a little over $200.00 in my pocket!

That's my one and only Vegas success story.

I can see why you like the game. Thanks for encouraging me to check it out. I wanted to explain why I was hesitating.

There is an aspect of being a woman, actually there are many, but I will share one with you, that men cannot relate to.

I hate being rude, even to rude people. Men in general assume if you are being nice and interested in what they say, you are "interested" in them in a very personal way. Also, in a bar setting this can be misunderstood when a woman is unescorted. There are those that can be so insistent they can make me very uncomfortable. I actually have had a few very difficult situations years ago. So, I just avoid the situation.

With it being 8AM and the table full of younger men, I felt "safe." But, within an hour the young man I was standing next to was trying to get me to go off and play the slot machines with him. I politely declined as the rest of the men smiled. He was very gracious, so it ended up OK, just not a situation I like. I especially am uncomfortable in being viewed as an older woman who hits on younger men.

Hi,

Some times I think I have a very bad gambiling problem, I WILL NOT GaMBLE. I learned the odds back in High school form my math teacher who I looked up to at that time. I think the statement of 0.32% return is wrong it should be 32% which is 32 cents back on every dollar bet. ).32% found be 1/3 of a penny back on every dollar or 1/300 of wining someting. If that is the case nobody would play for very long.

Back in 1985 when traveling around the country I got as far west as SALT LAKE CITY, My mother asked if I wanted to go to vages and i said no as at that time it didn't hae the show and crazy stuff that is there now.

I think you're right. I put a "%" sign on the number and didn't multiply by 100.

I'm not a big gambler at all. Although I am not a great mathematician or statistician, I like the probability and statistics of the game. I could just as well play craps on the computer as play in a casino. Money and winnings are secondary.

If you play a perfect game, according to the odds... and that is a BIG "IF"... you can make money at craps. However, with all the activity and commotion going on in a casino, plus the free drinks, it's very hard to play any game by the odds, let alone a fast moving game like craps.

I don't care where you go, whether it's Vegas or the Indian casino or even on your computer. You should look at gambling as just another form of entertainment like you would look at going to a movie or watching TV. The second you go into a gambling game as if you are trying to make money... "Break the bank," if you will... you have already lost.

Like you say, the odds are stacked against you. If they weren't, the casinos wouldn't be in business. Would they?
