Tagging / keywords in Gallery

I would have to say at this point that without a quality tagging method such as found at flickr, having 50 thousand fur images as opposed to just 18 thousand simply means it will be even more difficult to find an image in the proverbial haystack...

Ahh.... but we do have a tagging method. Keywords can (and should) be assigned to each file when it is uploaded. These keywords should include fur-type, type of garment, and anything else that would aid a search.

PLEASE FOLKS .. FUR TYPE ON ALL PICTURES AT THE MINIMUM

This is the main way to track pictures.

I've been trying to do this gradually as I revisit The Gallery Albums and any help is certainly welcome by those who have the access to make those additions.

At present, keyboards can only be assigned when a file is uploaded, but we definitely need a method to retroactively add keywords to the files that have already been uploaded. This is the only way the gallery can become a community driven place.

samurman,

Are you volunteering to help add keywords to existing images in the Gallery

OFF definitely needs help getting all 21,000 files properly tagged.

I've thought more than once of not accepting a picture for inclusion if it does not have the fur type at least indicated.

It only takes a moment to do this.

In fact the eBay Album should also include the sellers ID as well. I do this whenever I know it. I've added this to ones I do know.

AKcoyote,

There is no need to search for heroic volunteers to do the messy work; the only way forward is to make this process automatic so any viewer can add tags to the photos in the gallery. It may take one volunteer three months' work to tag a thousand photos, but if, say, a hundred people contribute a little, more can be achieved in less time.

I have just uploaded 13 pictures to the gallery and spent a long time filling in information, keywords etc, but when I clicked update, the gallery software gave an error and all my efforts are gone now! This is ridiculous and so discouraging:(

Now, I need some time until I recover from this blow:(

Never had that happen but I haven't uploaded many pictures since the recent changes.

Where did you put the text?

I spend a LOT of time going back trough The Gallery putting fur types in pictures without them.

Right now only outstanding pictures demonstrating different furs.

Sometimes it's discouraging since it seems most don't care to do the basics for a good search.

Fixed your pictures samurman.

If you could provide any specifics such as the text of the error message, it might help me figure out what went wrong.

I agree that tags/keywords should be REQUIRED to allow uploads to be accepted. Unfortunately the software is not currently designed to make that an option. When time permits, I will look into the code to determine if we can require more info with uploads.

Alternatively, I suggest a new policy of NOT moving images from the Sorting Bin album until the uploader adds the necessary info. As users retain control of the files they have uploaded, they can go back and add the needed info to make searching reasonable.

In the past when I've had issues uploading, I simply upload the pictures then go back and edit the information for each picture. This is one step I am taking "now" to try and alleviate work later on everyone's part, including my own.

On anther site (Different topic) I often have to post large numbers of photos. Up to 250 at once. I actually find it easy just to post them singly. You don't have to wait til the first one gets through loading to post the second. You can go through putting 25 or more in line if you wish and just walk away.

Of course this depends on what you are loading and how it is filed in your computer, etc. But that is VERY easy to do.

Since the information SHOULD be included I see no advantages in uploading large numbers of pictures at once

For me the picture has to be as perfect as possible BEFORE I upload. I spend a great deal of time on my new scans for instance, taking out dust flecks, correcting color balance, enhancing deep shadows and a host of other things. I want others to have as fine a picture as possible.

I've passed on a few tips for better pictures in the past and perhaps we should have an information page on tricks of the trade
