Man dies after setting himself on fire outside fur store

A very sick individual, indeed! In my opinion, this is indicative of the type of people who do things such as stage protests in front of fur stores. People like this do nothing to help the anti-fur cause.

What's that I hear? Is it the sound of another pellet of chlorine dropping into the gene pool?

How stupid can you be

Their tactic's certainly were not working and I don't think this will make any difference other than to point out how idiotic these folks are.

An extremely ill, pathetic person.

I can see this being turned into an episode on the SpikeTV show '1000 Ways to Die'.

Sent an email to Horst:

Horst;

I'm sorry that such a stupid and useless act occurred in the front of your shop.

When there are so many truly egregious acts and situations in the world to grieve, protest and anguish over this kid does such a useless act with such final results ... Not the results he intended I'm certain.

This really is not your fault nor is there anything you have done nor could have done .. except the same thing he did, to aswage these truly demented individuals.

Since they were failing at all their efforts to cope with you they fell to the final act of desperation for their lost cause.

I am your loyal and truly dedicated customer and you have my full support.

Sincerely,

OFF

Quote published elsewhere...

The man who set himself afire, 26-year-old Daniel Shaull of Dodge City, Kan., died at a hospital later Wednesday. His father, Warren, said his son had psychiatric problems and was living on the streets.

Shaull recently boarded a bus to Oregon, where he had never been, and arrived in Portland about five days ago, his father said. He said Shaull was suicidal when he left.

"I had a feeling something was going to tragically happen," Warren Shaull said.

Though Shaull set himself on fire near Nicholas Ungar Furs at 1137 S.W. Yamhill St. -- the site of numerous anti-fur protests -- Warren Shaull said his son's act was not political. He said Shaull came to Portland to seek help from a religious group that ended up taking him to the Portland Rescue Mission.

"He was mentally ill," Warren Shaull said. "He was tired of living."

Warren Shaull was interviewed before Sizer's news conference and could not be reached afterward for comment.

As we would say in the Army...."That's one down. 2000 left to go."

Can't fault the person on their dedication to their cause. But then that can be truly said of those Muslims who espouse terrorism too.

I think that OFF might have a point about this deluded person possibly being induced to immolate himself at that particular spot by fanatical anti-fur types. If they'd more than likely stage live-skinning videos to sell their message, why not take the next step using a human?

Whether others agree or not, this is one less person to worry about. If in fact he did have problems, why was he left on his own? Wouldn't it have been in his best interest if family intervened and helped him properly? Again, one less person fouling up the gene pool. I only hope those at Ungar are no worse for wear, no pun intended.

Now that I think about it I have no doubt in my mind that PeTA would be capable of stooping that low!

I read the kind e-mail to Horst from OFF. I'm going to give him a call tomorrow to wish him well and offer encouragement. I purchased a golden island fox and knit hat from him two years ago when I stopped in Portland and found him to be a very nice person. I can imagine that those batsh** crazy AR cultists/terrorists will try to use this event against him and his property as well as the very idea of fur. He needs encouragement...and protection.

Well, I've certainly disagreed with the opinions and actions of others, but I've always - I hope - exercised common sense in doing so.

I think that Kappa hit the nail on the head. It is my judgment that this man who torched himself in the Far-West Portland had other issues than his extreme position on animal rights and his need to "make a statement". It's likely he had serious mental health or personal issues. Someone should have intervened along the way in his life to prevent this tragedy. I know that I've had to with others, though 't ain't easy.

My sincere sympathy goes out to the family of this man, and to the store that was the site of the protest. Neither the family nor Horst deserved this.

And I hope it makes just one flaming anti-fur nutter rethink his/her position. It IS possible to be too extreme.

Fortunately, here in Portland's namesake, we haven't had this sort of thing happen yet.

I agree.Obviously this man had severe mental issues. It's unfortunate he picked the furrier.Hope other people can add their sypathy. After all,all he hurt was himself and of course his poor family.
