Fur identification

Howdy guys, gals and pals! So recently stumbled across Facebook marketplace on this stole/shawl.

The seller listed it cheap enough to buy just out of curiosity but hasn’t gotten it officially identified. This fur piece is from the 80s-90s and when she went into a fur salon some of the workers the theorized that it could be nutria, muskrat, or even caribou. The listing mentioned that it might be mink but I don’t think it is. Any help would be much appreciated!

The catch is she will honor the cheap price now or she can take it to another fur salon and get it positively identified and appraised which will raise the price significantly I presume.

Honestly I don’t know if I’d ever wear this piece out and about but I imagine it could be a pretty nice indoor fur. Love yall so much!

I’ve never heard of a “sconce” but I don’t think it’s a skunk just because of pelt patterns. But in all honesty it could be that.

Honestly I don't have idea. This is difficult for me of identifying this fur. Fox is more simple hahaha.

I find the design of this one really beautiful and nice longer.

Not sure but I think it may be Opossum from New Zealand/Australia or Muskrat?

No definitely not possum(as we call them)

Could it be sable tails?

I’m thinking more and more that this might be mink or a dark sable. I could definitely be fox but I don’t have it and I can’t drive in order to feel it.

I found this one that kind of resembles it which is a mink stole from the 1980s.

and I also found this one which is dark Russian sable which also looks similar.

1890's maybe.

The seller says it’s from the 1980s or 1990s and it has been properly stored since being bought.

The idea of dark sable is possibly, when we see the design of sable and how this one was work, I see similarity.

I appreciate vintage fur and new fur, different design, different style but the same pleasure.

The style is part of the reason I actually am proceeding with the buying process. It’s a unique piece and I don’t think there is another one like it in the world. I’m not sure if I’d ever wear it out or how I would style it but for now this will be an indoor fur until I either figure out the styling or get it altered. The main reason I am buying this is because I just want to figure out what the heck it is!

I'm thinking it's sable -possibly male skins?...

The styling is quite 30's, possibly made in the 80's but think the furs would be a better quality if someone went to the effort of having it made.

We have a few sable furs, all are different to this -more classic looking sable like in modern photos, and high quality female skins.

A pity @Refur couldn't help, it a shame she hasn't been around for quite a while 😔

Yes I understand you and I prefer buy unique pieces or original fur by the design or the color or just the animal skin used.

Real feeling we imagine when we buy new fur items from sale garage, Internet sites specialist.

I have a real feeling with vintage mink and sable, I find the design so elegant and glamour.

Good point, with age taken into account. The fur on the model in the top 2 pictures looks different than the close up.  Having fun trying to figure this out.

I’m thinking the drastic difference in appearance is because the seller used their camera flash when taking the picture to identify that it’s a mahogany and not black. Again that’s only a theory

So update… it was delivered Monday at 6pm… it never showed up. USPS lost the package and it wasn’t I showed up to the post office 2 days in a row that they started a missing package inquire. It looks like the box took a little tumble because one of the corners had been caved in a bit and I thought water might have gotten in it. Lucky for me it was just a dent and the box was dry so they must have delivered it before it started to rain.

later today I will take it to my furrier for definitive identification and a cleaning/glazing! Will update yall when able.

WE HAVE AN ANSWER

took it to my lovely furrier in Addison Texas, I forget how much I love them everytime I go in there, and the answer is:

It is from the 1980s and is made of European Stone Marten full skins.

my furrier said it was in fantastic condition and is truly a unique statement piece. It can also be worn a couple different ways such as a stole around the neck, like a shawl across the back and over the arms, but also like a scarf where you can do a loose knot in the front like a sweater!
