Who are the Masters of the Masters?

I was reading an article on Jerry Sorbara “Last of the Furriers” and got me thinking, “Who are(were) the Masters of the Masters” of the Fur Coat creators? The ones who are the equivalent of a Rembrandt, Picasso, or Renoit in this industry and that any piece created by them should be seen as a work of art, craftsmanship, and mastery - if you should ever come across one, you would need to seriously consider selling off many of the things you currently love to obtain a slice of perfection.

Are you aware of any? Or even have one in your collection?

  • pnwhist changed the title to Who are the Masters of the Masters?

By a cursory google search and obviously non-exhaustive search, I was able to find these Masters but I am curious through the hivemind who is that supreme short list.

Anna Nateece - Liberrace’s Furrier https://annanateece.com/about/
Chris Anthopoulos
David Green
Jerry Sorbara - https://bit.ly/3BPFSr1
Lars Paustian
Leslie Szakacs
Yanni Hilas - Pologeorgis

There are many. The department stores had their own collection: Saks, Bonwit's, Hudson Bay, Holt-Renfrew... .

Major design houses had their fur lines: Dior, YSL, Givenchy, Schiaparelli, Nina Ricci, Giuliano Teso ... .

And then the furriers: Dennis Basso, Helen Yarmak, Fendi, Sprung Freres, Grosvenor, Christie Bros, Birger Christian, ... .

The list is huge, especially if we go back in time to the golden age of furs. May new artisans continue the traditions of the craft.

MAXIMILLION, of course.

Thanks for responding. To refine the inquiry, definitely asking the Master Furrier individual personal that is behind the label. Just like Jerry Sorbara, I enjoy reading up on their journey on how arrived to become masters of their craft.

Then Ben Kahn

You nailed it on Ben Kahn... “whose furs were eventually to bear one of America's most‐desired labels.”

Chris Anthopoulos was a true master.

His studio in Toronto, on Spadina, was called Yukon Furs.
He is retired now.

In Fall 2000, my father had a full-length mink made by Chris.   He used Canada Majestic female pelts.

I have some sketches Chris made, when designing the coat as per my father's specs.

Also-- a pic of my Dad in the coat, circa Spring 2002 (IIRC)....

Also, Martin Van Der Mark from London (?Ontario?), Canada is a Master Furrier. I am curious on how he was/is ranked among his peers:

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any background information by doing a little Googling. Would you happen to have a story behind Julie Dilue?

Interestingly enough, I did run across Cynthia Parks in my web searching. She happens to be a Master Furrier for 40+ years - working for Mano Swartz and Evans before venturing on her own.

Wow impressive! Although he's not around anymore, I think his company is in some form or fashion. Try giving them a call and navigate through a couple of representatives. I'd be interested in knowing the results. Congratulations on owning a “Ben Kahn!” Out of all the furs she owns, this brand is my wife’s favorite!

Ralph Lauren:

Designed and sold a lot of fur / coats at one point.

This picture was taken in 1978 of him and his family all in fur.

He is but one of the many Hypocrites that jumped on board PETA's bandwagon.
