Does anyone feel guilty for wearing something that although beautiful, by its very nature necessitated pain and death? Does anyone feel guilty about having a fetish.

 

Not trying to be negative, I know we should celebrate fur love, but I'm curious.

Farm-raised fur-bearing animals are euthanized by CO2 inhalation (asphyxiation). It is not painful. I think barbiturate overdose would be better, but that requires a DEA number and syringes and so forth.

 

I have a problem with some people appearing to take delight in the suffering of animals. While I enjoy wearing fur and enjoying fur. I think it is only civil to euthanize animals as painless as possible. I don't want to see any animal suffer.

I have a thing for Cruella (as she is animated at least), but I think the idealized fiction is a long shot off from reality - i.e. I don't appreciate having a real human face tacked onto the lines "poison them, drown them, bash them in the head." I would be worried if I met an actual zoosadist. It's a bit like watching pornography, I think: some things are conducive to pleasure, but not to everyday living as an (otherwise) ordinary human being.

I can get my AALAC handbook on euthanizing laboratory animals. I forget what AALAC stands for. Sorry. Something like American Association of Laboratory Animal Care. There are also the USDA guidelines as well. I think for cattle it is a point blank shot just under the skull into the brain. Not a job I'd want. But when I euthanized my rats for my dissertation, I did an I.V. overdose of Nembutol. I think the animal was gone before I finished pushing the Nembutol in, and it was only about 1 ml (cc).

 

With regard to fur animals, I have been told by a very reputable source that farms use CO2 asphyxia (as pointed out in my first post on this topic). That was used for lab animals in the 70's and 80's (along with decapitation, but that's messy...also NOT ALLOWED anymore UNLESS there is a specific reason why overdose is not appropriate.

 

Unfortunately I have experience in this type of stuff. But I can also use it to my (our) advantage. Because I KNOW the rules.

I believe if the animal must die for any reason it should be done as quickly and painlessly as possible. My problem is with how mankind has treated wildlife. I find it criminal that so many animal species were over hunted for pure pleasure and greed. I wish there was no endangered species list. I like balance and responsible wild life management. If we cared for the planet wisely there would be no problem enjoying some fine beautiful furs. I will always feel a little sympathy for the foxes, minks and other farmed raised animals that end up as our furs but I have no guilt over their fate. I love my furs! My favs are the great fox furs from the 80's and Coyote. Love the soft and fluffy!!!! No guilt only desire to see more !!!!!

Guilty NEVER: The public obsession with using and owning certain animal skins / furs as depraved or unmoral: baffles me.

 

No one can deny the fact that the animals the general public has deemed as a food source and as a source for other by products like leather. Are all “FUR BEARING”: cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, buffalo, rabbits, etc. and all farmed raised. In the USA alone over "9 Billion" animals were slaughtered in 2013 to feed the general public. The number of animals that were put down in that same year for their “so called fur” was 50 million worldwide (fur is the most valuable part of certain animals: as is the meat of certain other animals). But every part of those animals also have great value as fertilizer, bait for commercial fishing, food for other animals, mink oil is highly coveted and found in a lot of stores as a conditioner and waterproofing for leather. Fox urine can be found in any garden center it is an excellent deterrent for garden predators, etc. Of that 50 million less than 15 to 20% of those animals are taken from the backwoods. But the animals that were taken from the bush provided families with a source of income. The next time you sit down to a plate of King crab legs, cod, salmon, etc. you can more than likely thank a mink farmer for that meal.

i do feel a little guilty. i obviously dont think its wrong to wear fur, and i disagree with anyone who thinks that--there is just a bit of guilt on my mind about it, but not much.

Nope. I feel more guilty wearing petroleum products which are way too common in cheap, fast fashion. We use petrol products so much, last thing I want to do is wear it.

I have no issue with the natural world and its predators but as humans we have a duty to give animals the best possible life and best possible death when we harvest their bodies for warmth or sustenance. I always will try to buy certified humane/grass fed meats and will always buy European/American furs.

Yes definitely a little bit. So i try to find faux fur. But unfortunately it's not that soft. Hope it will increase. The worst think on faux is that even the price is not an indicator for softness. So i own real furs, but feel a little bit guilty. But that's something i would never say to anybody. I try to convince everybody that fur is fine.
