THELMA TODD

"The Ice Cream Blonde" or , more famously , "Hot Toddy"

Found dead from carbon monoxide poisoning in her car in 1935 ; the inquest decided that she committed suicide but , like Marilyn Monroe 30 years later , many people suspect that she was in fact murdered.

MARIE PREVOST

It`s amazing what you learn through being a member of the Den. About 20 years ago I bought a very battered copy of the `Jesus Of Cool` album by the grizzled old British new wave producer/songwriter Nick Lowe and was particularly struck by a track on side two called `Marie Provost` [sic] mainly because it featured the rather bizarre and gruesome lyric -

"She was a winner / That became the doggie`s dinner"

Well now I know the story behind it.

Marie Prevost was a silent actress who starred in a number of Mack Sennett comedies in the early Twenties before hitting the bottle following the death of her mother in 1926. The advent of talkies combined with her ballooning weight meant that work had effectively dried up by the early Thirties. Told to lose weight by the studio she fell victim to what we recognise today as bulimia and in 1934 she literally starved herself to death. When police eventually broke into her apartment they discovered that her pet dachshund had chewed away most of the flesh on her arms and legs , possibly in a vain attempt to revive his mistress but more likely to stave off hunger. Yeuch!!!!

BETTY COMPSON

Another silent star who faded with the arrival of sound in the movies although Betty fared better than many , using her savings and business acumen to run a successful shop on Hollywood Boulevard for many years.

BEBE DANIELS

Originally a silent actress who starred opposite Harold Lloyd in a number of his classic comedies , she later found fame over on this side of the pond with her husband Ben Lyon in the long-running radio series Life With The Lyons

SUSAN HAYWARD

A stunning actress and a real fighter. Susan Hayward lost out in the screen test for the role of Scarlett O`Hara in Gone With The Wind but this didn`t stop her winning an Oscar for her role as a convicted murderess in I Want To Live and putting in one of the most moving screen performances ever seen as an alcoholic in I`ll Cry Tomorrow. In 1972 she was diagnosed with inoperable brain tumours and given just months to live but she defied the odds and fought on bravely , even appearing at an award ceremony in 1974 , before finally losing her battle in 1975.

Should have some Rita Hayworth ready to post in a day or two OFF , but for the moment I`m still trying to clear a backlog of disastrously disorganised URLs.

MAE BUSCH

Possibly recognisible to some for her frequent appearances as Oliver Hardy`s acid-tongued wife.

MARTHA HYER

An actress you hardly ever hear mentioned nowadays which I find strange. Not only was she stunningly attractive but she also showed real talent in a variety of roles over an extremely long career (she starred in her first movie in 1935 aged just 11). The highlight of her career was probably alongside Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin in Some Came Running , a role which earnt her an Oscar nomination.

Another huge star of the Forties virtually forgotten today. At one point in her career she was being billed above Cary Grant although a sore point was the fact that she never earnt anything like his salary!

CLAUDETTE COLBERT

"The Queen of Screwball Comedy"

A reluctant actress who only went into movies when the Depression restricted opportunities in the theatre , her preferred medium. For some unknown reason almost all the pics of her show her left side - she had a lifelong aversion to being photographed in profile showing the right side of her face. Can`t see why myself...........

ALICE BRADY

Star of over fifty silent films she finally won an Oscar in 1938 for her role in the movie In Old Chicago. Unbelievable as it sounds , as she was on her way up to the stage to collect the award an unknown thief ran up and stole the statuette before it could be presented and managed to escape from the building without being apprehended! If that wasn`t bad enough , Alice was already dying from cancer and passed away before the Academy got round to presenting her with a replacement Oscar. How unlucky can you get? Incidentally , the thief was never caught and the Oscar was never retrieved.

SABRINA

............or A Tale Of Two Normas.

One was American and used her stunning good looks to rise to the very pinnacle of Hollywood stardom. The other one was British and.............didn`t.

Norma Ann Sykes headed for London in search of a modelling job at the age of 16 and was almost instantly the talk of the town , probably because she flaunted her 41" chest at every available opportunity. Adopting the stage name Sabrina she first appeared on TV with veteran (alleged) comedian Arthur Askey and her first movie was the very English comedy "Blue Murder At St Trinian`s". Incredible as it sounds , she shared top biliing on all the posters for the film despite not uttering a single word!

Sabrina soon left for Hollywood in the hope of emulating the success of Marilyn Monroe but she never rose above the level of dumb blonde in a succession of awful B-movies ("Satan In High Heels" is probably the best known) although she did replace Jayne Mansfield in "The Ice House" when the latter died in a car crash.

According to a recent UK newspaper report Sabrina lives today as a virtual recluse in a squalid suburb of L.A. - in her heyday she attracted crowds in excess of 10,000 people , today it`s doubtful whether anyone over 40 has even heard of her.

SABRINA

More of Britain`s answer to Jayne Mansfield and another good example of how enlightening it can be being a member of the Den.

I was introduced to the inspired lunacy of The Goons by my father at a very early age (*NOTE for any non-English Denizens - The Goon Show was a BBC radio programme of the 1950s which completely redefined comedy and paved the way for Monty Python. Try to imagine Robin Williams playing the chimney-sweep in Mary Poppins after overdosing on hallucinogenic drugs. The Goons were nothing like that). For years I`ve been mystified by lines like "By the great sweaters of Sabrina!!!" and "through the snowy wastes of Sabrina" - well now I know what the fascination was , although personally I`d be scared stiff of having my eyes poked out.

RITA HAYWORTH

Especially for OFF.

Not a lot of people realise that the immortal Rita Hayworth was actually one of Hollywood`s very first Hispanic stars - she was born (and was billed in her very early film appearances) as Marguerita Cansino. Something else I never knew.

LOUISE BROOKS

Despite starring in some of the best movies of the silent era and making the `bob` haircut THE fashion statement of The Jazz Age Louise Brooks was effectively written out of Hollywood history for decades - only recently has her talent and contribution begun to be recognised. Supremely proud of the quality of her `art` she was never slow to publicly criticise producers , scriptwriters , directors , fellow actors - anyone , in fact , who appeared to her to place profit before perfection. In 1928 she abandoned Hollywood for Europe to make films more in keeping with her artistic integrity and further scandalised Tinseltown by becoming the first actress to openly portray lesbianism on screen. When she returned to the USA she was effectively blackballed by the studios but still managed to carve out a successful second career as a writer. Fittingly one of her biographies is called "Portrait Of An Anti-Star".
